Juana Flores is Executive Director of MUA. An immigrant from Zacatecas, Mexico, Juana joined MUA as a member in 1990 and was first hired onto staff in 1995. Juana spent her early teenage years in Mexico as a domestic worker, and at age 14 became a Carmelite nun, a decision which gave her the opportunity to finish high school and obtain training and employment as a medical assistant. In her 20s, she left the convent to marry her childhood sweetheart. A few years later they migrated to the US with their two young children, where she worked again as a domestic worker to survive. She became involved in MUA just a few months after it was founded. Since then, Juana has gained a variety of management skills and has provided technical assistance for immigrant organizations across the country. She is a founder and former Board President of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and also serves as one of the founding U.S. representatives to the International Domestic Worker Federation.
